Sports Law

Thinking of going into the specialty of sports law?  You might want to check out the conference to be held on April 16th in Ann Arbor.  Organized by Marissa Pollick, an attorney in who practices in Ann Arobor and faculty member at the University of Michigan, she’s hoping the conference will bring to light the demand that’s growing fast for legal minds in the area of sports and sports business.  A. Harrison Barnes, founder of LawCrossing.com, says there are many new career opportunities in the legal field that weren’t available as recently as five years ago.  Whether it’s sports team management, representation for players, contract law and regulations for NCAA, or Title IX issues, there are many new sectors in athletics that are in need of legal representation.  The Conference, “Sports Law: recent Developments in Careers and Practice” is designed for attorneys, law students, business students and anyone who might be considering a career in sports, says Pollick.

Along with Pollick, presenters will include Richard T. Hewlett, an attorney and  former University of Michigan quarterback who will discuss licensing contracts and James F. Stapelton, another Ann Arbor attorney who also serves on the Minnesota Vikings Board of Advisors and former vice president for business operations for the Detroit Tigers, will discuss league and team management business for major league baseball and the National Football League.  Pollick will be presenting new developments in Title IX ligitation and Jessica C. Berman, associate counsel with the National Hockey League in New York will be presenting “Managing Legal Issues in the NHL”.  There will be several other presenters present, as well, who will present in other areas, including sports law, legal issues and compliance law.

The LawCrossing.com founder says this will certainly attract a large number of law students and attorneys who are looking to broaden their horizons.  A. Harrison Barnes also reiterates Pollick’s statement of jury verdicts against universities on the rise.  With what Pollick calls a “flood of Title IX retaliation cases” where plaintiffs were fired or disciplined by universities for pointing out differences in men and women’s sports accommodations, this conference could not have come at a better time for many.  The goal, says Pollick, along with introducing legal minds to the possibilities of sports law, will also serve as a question and answer session for those already in this specific area and for those considering the possibilities, “It’s a very distinguished array of panelists…not often brought together in an event of this kind”.

This is a phenomenal opportunity for anyone interested in sports law and clearly, this will continue to see tremendous growth as bigger contracts continue to be negotiated every season for players in every sport.  Be sure to visit LawCrossing.com for the latest in legal career opportunities in every sector, including sports law.  It’s a great networking tool and employers can post openings at no cost.
